Putting a Rap on the Holidays

Raptors Foundation Presents FYFB With Donation

The wives of the Toronto Raptors players once again set the pace off the court as the lead donor to Fort York Food Bank (FYFB)'s annual Holiday Fund Appeal when they presented a $5,000 cheque from the Raptors Foundation for Kids.

The wives of Raptors players raised the money through an in arena auction where baskets of their husband's favourite things were sold to the highest bidders.

Mesha O'Neal, wife of former Raptors player Jermaine O'Neal, presented the cheque to FYFB directors Doug Anweiler and Marianne Gwon at centre court before the Raptors home game against the Mavericks on December 17.

"This has been a challenging year for us at FYFB and we can not fully express our gratitude to the Raptors Foundation for Kids for once again leading the way in our efforts to help families during the holiday season and throughout the year," stated FYFB Board Chair Ravi Sreedharan. "With hundreds of children and their families relying on FYFB for basic food supplies and support, the generous support of the Raptors Foundation for Kids ensures that we are going to be there to help brighten the lives of people living in poverty in our community with special holiday hampers."

The Raptors wives along with the team's community relations staff, organized the holiday auction to support the work FYFB does in helping families and children in need in downtown Toronto.

"We're excited to help families in need, especially around the holidays," said Lori Radke, director of community partnerships for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. "Our players, coaches and staff are dedicated to giving back and playing a leadership role in the community.

FYFB would like to extend a very special thank you to the Raptors players and their families, the Raptors Foundation for Kids, Toronto Raptors Basketball Club and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment for their fantastic support of our Holiday Fund Appeal Campaign.

About the Fort York Food Bank

FYFB is a multi-service agency focused on reconnecting people with our community. We do this by working with partners who share our vision to: feed the hungry by providing the basic nutritional requirements to individuals and families in need; and, help people get on track by providing counselling, training and advocacy to help people find jobs, safe housing and appropriate social/community programs.

FYFB was founded in February 1998 as an independent agency of the Daily Bread Food Bank Foundation of Toronto. FYFB is a registered charitable organization -- number 867147464 RR0001. FYFB is governed and managed by a voluntary Board of Directors who are elected by our membership at our AGM.

FYFB originally focused on providing emergency food supplies, but to meet the economic and social needs of the most vulnerable people within our community and resolve our clients' underlying issues, FYFB's programming has grown to an integrated set of services to prevent homelessness, eliminate hunger and provide a safe environment for connecting with our community.
